Frequently asked questions about travel insurance for students


Yes, coverage is available for three different scenarios:

  • For Canadians studying in another province: Coverage applies anywhere in Canada for the duration of your plan.
  • For Canadians studying abroad: Coverage applies anywhere outside Canada for the duration of your plan.
  • For international students in Canada: Coverage applies anywhere in Canada and up to 15 days outside Canada, as long as travel doesn’t exceed 49% of the coverage period and starts/ends in Canada (excluding your home country).

Our travel insurance plans for students include a trip break benefit, which allows you to suspend your coverage without ending it if you visit home during your trip. Your coverage is immediately reinstated when you:

  • Leave home if you are a Canadian studying in another province or territory 

  • Leave Canada if you are a Canadian studying abroad

  • Arrive in Canada if you are an international student in Canada 

  • You must call 1-877-331-3134 or +1(519) 251-7401 to get approval from our Assistance Centre before you travel home. We do not refund your premiums for the days you are visiting home.


All our travel insurance plans for students have a $0 deductible.


Yes. International students in Canada are required to have health coverage for the duration of their stay.1

Refunds are only available when Manulife receives your request for a refund before your departure date.


To be eligible for CoverMe® Student Travel Insurance, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a full-time student with proof of enrolment in a recognized institution.
  • Canadians studying in another province: Covered by a provincial/territorial health plan.
  • Canadians studying abroad: Covered by a provincial/territorial health plan.
  • International students in Canada: Not covered by a provincial/territorial health plan.

Additional conditions may apply based on age and travel specifics.


Student travel insurance typically does not cover:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions that are not stable
  • Travel against medical advice
  • Injuries related to high-risk or extreme sports
  • Non-emergency or elective treatments
  • Losses related to alcohol or drug misuse
  • Travel to restricted or unsafe destinations
